LORAIN SWCD 2021 SEEDLING SALE

The 2021 Annual Conservation Seedling Sale is now underway at the Lorain Soil & Water Conservation District office. Reserve the items that you would like now. They will be ready for pick-up in time for spring planting. Orders are accepted on a first come, first serve basis since there are a limited number of each packet available.

tree Most seedlings will easily fit in a grocery bag. Extra seedlings or packets will be for sale during pick-up times. All stock is inspected and offered without warranty. The District is not responsible for survival of the seedlings after pickup.

Please check and inspect your order before you leave the pick-up point.

For best results and survival rates, seedlings should be planted as soon as possible after pick-up. No refunds will be made on orders not picked up. Do not call Grobe Fruit Farm.

Payment must accompany order. Orders will be taken until stock sells out – so order early! We will have a drop off box located in the foyer of the Ag center. Orders and payments can be dropped off in the yellow box or mailed in. Order forms will also be available in the foyer.

Reminder post cards will be sent out one week prior to pick-up.



SPRING FISH SALE

We are now taking orders for fingerling-size fish for stocking your ponds!

Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Hybrid Bluegill, Channel Catfish, Yellow Perch, Redear Sunfish (Shellcrackers), Fathead Minnows, Triploid White Amur and Japanese Koi are available.

On pick-up day, you will need to bring a container filled with your pond water to pick up your order – approximately 5 gallons of water for each 100 fingerling size fish. We suggest using a trash can with a new unscented plastic liner – then put in the pond water so the top of the bag can be tied shut for transportation. Remember, the Amur are 10"-12" long and need a suitable container.

We have also included in the fish sale, the opportunity to purchase Steve Fende'’s book, titled “Pond Management” 2018 Edition for purchase at $20.00 each.

ENTER THE LORAIN COUNTY BIG TREE CONTEST

The Lorain Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) is kicking off the sizth annual Lorain County BIG TREE Contest! This contest will promote the beauty and benefits provided by our county’s biggest and oldest trees. This year we are looking for Lorain County's biggest Black Walnut. Participants can nominate what they believe might be the largest in Lorain county based on trunk circumference, crown spread, and total height.

Nomination forms must be submitted to Lorain SWCD no later than Friday, July 30th by 4:30 p.m. Please email to jschwartz@loraincounty.us or submit in person or through the mail to the Lorain Soil & Water Conservation District, 42110 Russia Rd., Elyria, OH 44035. The top three winners will be awarded gift certificates to Don Mould's Plantation. First place is $100.00, second place is $50.00 and third is $25.00. Winners will be announced at the Lorain SWCD Annual Meeting in September.

THIRD ANNUAL SWCD PHOTO CONTEST

The Lorain SWCD is pleased to announce our 3rd Annual Photo Contest. The contest is intended to allow residents of all ages to showcase their photography skills, while capturing the beauty of Lorain County. Photos must be taken within Lorain County and only amateur photographers are permitted to enter the contest. This year’s categories are "Waterscapes". The judging will be based on relevance to the category, creativity, photographic quality, and impact.

All entries must be submitted in digital format by Friday, July 30, 2021. Each photographer may enter a total of 3 prints for either category.

JOEL McROBERTS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS DUE DATE APPROACHING

A $1,000 scholarship is now available to a Lorain County high school senior who will enroll in a two or four year program in an agriculture or natural resources related field. Application forms are available here, from your high school guidance counselor, and at the SWCD office, and need to be returned by the April 16, 2021 deadline.

There is also a $1,000 continuing education scholarship. Applicants (Lorain county residents) must be enrolled as a full-time student in a two or four-year course of study, in an agricultural or natural resource related field. The application form for this scholarship is due by July 30, 2021.

2018 LORAIN COUNTY PLAT BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE

Who owns Lorain County? Thousands of people have a piece of it, and they are listed in the new plat book published by the Lorain Soil & Water Conservation District with Mapping Solutions. The 2018 book is available for purchase for $25.00 at the Lorain SWCD office in the Agricultural Center, 42110 Russia Road in Elyria. For more information contact their office at (440) 326-5800 or stop in between the hours of 8-4:30 p.m.

Lorain SWCD will be holding a drawing to give away BOTH a Premium Wall Map and a SmartMap of Lorain County, so please stop by the office to register for a chance to win one of these great products!

This 110-page spiral bound book features the standard landownership map pages showing townships and ranges of Lorain County, these maps include the property boundaries for all rural parcels, the name of the owner and the number of acres owned. Opposite the landownership maps are the new enhanced LiDar aerial view maps which have a 3D effect showing the actual topography of the land. Also, there is a handy landowner index for easy cross referencing.

In this new edition, you will find information regarding the Lorain Soil & Water Conservation District, a Government Directory, Ohio Indian Trails Map and a County Road Map with Road index as well as Municipality Maps of Amherst, Avon, Avon Lake, Grafton, Elyria, LaGrange, and many more. Another new feature in the 2018 publication is an index of the Initialed Parcels for your easy reference. As an added bonus there is an explanation of the public land survey system. Mapping Solutions is the publisher.

This information is valuable to anyone with a need to know who owns land in Lorain County. Prospective or adjoining property owners, hunters, foresters, timber and petroleum industry personnel, emergency services and many others would be interested in having a copy.
